A rare antique Japanese Yose Juban (寄せ襦袢) dating from around 1870, the transition period from the late Edo era to the early Meiji era.
This remarkable juban is constructed from a variety of traditional Japanese fabrics, creating a beautiful patchwork composition.
The garment features rich indigo-blue fabrics decorated with botanical and bamboo-like motifs, geometric patterns, floral designs and contrasting sections in cream, turquoise, purple and red.
The different fabrics, visible hand stitching, patches and repairs beautifully reflect the traditional Japanese practice of reusing and preserving valuable textiles.

As this is a Yose Juban assembled from multiple fabrics, the fiber and weave may differ between individual sections.

There are visible repairs, patches, small holes, stains, fading, discoloration, worn areas, loose threads and hand stitching throughout.
These imperfections are consistent with an approximately 150-year-old garment and are an important part of its history and unique character.
