Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (1808-1873) was first President of France from 1848-1852 and Emperor of the French from 1852-1870. Nephew of Napoleon I, he was the last monarch to rule France. He reluctantly entered the Franco-Prussian War in July 1870, but the ill-prepared French Army was quickly overrun and Napoleon III was captured at the Battle of Sedan (September 1-2, 1870). He was imprisoned at a castle at Wilhelmshöhe and was then exiled to England in March 1871. He passed away two years later on January 9, 1873.
