Description
An exceptional and beautifully preserved mid-19th-century miniature circular thermoplastic Union Case, historically cataloged as theKrainik-742 starburst pattern. Known colloquially to photographic historians as an"Oreo" case, this highly sought-after round pocket variant features a bold central eight-pointed starburst radiating out into fine linear rays, tightly framed by clean concentric lines and a classic rope-turn border. This variant is classified as scarce in early American photographic literature.
The chocolate brown molded thermoplastic exterior retains remarkably crisp structural definition to its high-relief areas. The matching halves align seamlessly, revealing a single-tray configuration with beautifully rendered concentric decorative rings lining the reverse side of the lid.The interior houses an incredibly sharp, high-contrast direct-positive miniaturetintype portraitof a young woman. The image is bordered by its original, highly reflective die-stamped starburst gilded brass mat and protective preserver ring:
- The Portrait:A striking bust-length image of a young lady or adolescent girl styled in classic mid-1860s fashion. Her hair is intricately coiffed with a braided crown accent, and she wears prominent dangling drop earrings. She is further distinguished by a broad, vertically striped silk bow elegantly tied at her high neckline.
A pristine specimen offering strong appeal to Civil War-era photographic historians, Union Case variant collectors, and antique costume enthusiasts alike.Condition Report
