1857 ALS Sir John Somerset Pakington Signed Letter Eaton Square House of Commons:
$237.50

1857 Autograph Letter Signed by Sir John Somerset Pakington – British Conservative Politician, First Lord of the Admiralty – House of Commons Reference

This is an original 3-page autograph letter signed “J. Wm. Packington” (Sir John Somerset Pakington, 1st Baron Hampton, 1799–1880), dated February 13, 1857, written from his residence at Eaton Square, London. The letter is boldly marked “Private” and addressed to S. J. Morriss, Esq.

Content & Context

In the letter, Pakington clarifies his actions in the House of Commons, noting that he did not actually read aloud certain letters but merely cited their contents as reported in newspapers. He states that he had the original letters before him only to verify authenticity if questioned by members. Pakington stresses that his objective had been achieved without needing to give the letters further publicity.

This reflects Pakington’s role in parliamentary affairs at the time, shortly before the 1857 general election. Pakington was a leading Conservative figure, serving as First Lord of the Admiralty and previously as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. His career culminated with his elevation as 1st Baron Hampton.
