An extraordinary little American pictorial Bible from the personal library of celebrated stage and screen actor Frederic March, with his printed library bookplate on the front pastedown.
Published in Hartford in 1850, The Hieroglyphick Bible was designed to familiarize children with Scripture through a remarkable combination of printed words and emblematic pictures. The title page proudly announces:
“Illustrated with nearly five hundred cuts.”
Across its 132 pages, hundreds of woodcut images take the place of words within Biblical passages, creating rebus-like visual puzzles filled with ships, animals, crowns, hearts, musical instruments, human figures and innumerable other objects.
Each pictorial passage is followed at the bottom of the page by the complete Biblical quotation, allowing the young reader to decipher the illustrated text and then check the solution.
The wonderful passage from I Kings, for example, visually represents the ships of Solomon bringing gold and silver, ivory, apes and peacocks. Other pages employ hearts, eyes, crowns, shepherds, musical instruments and dozens of other pictorial substitutions.
The book also contains substantial larger woodcuts, including the striking frontispiece, illustrated lives of the Evangelists, and additional illustrated Biblical material.
This copy has a particularly appealing provenance. It comes from the personal library of Frederic March (1897–1975), one of the major American actors of the 20th century and a two-time Academy Award winner. His handsome printed “FROM THE LIBRARY OF FREDERIC MARCH” bookplate remains affixed to the front pastedown.
