Historic Authentic French Christian ArtworkLe Dernier Soupir du Christ & Le Jugement Dernier

These are honestly two of the most striking pieces of artwork I’ve owned. They arelarge 19th-century French religious prints,Le Dernier Soupir du ChristandLe Jugement Dernier, and they have remained together as a pair for many years.

What really gets me about them is the detail. Pictures simply don’t do them justice. When you stand in front of them and look closely, you can actually read the emotion in the faces of the people. There are so many individual figures, expressions and small details that every time I walk by them, I seem to notice something I hadn’t seen before.

They are just beautiful pieces, and at their size they are incredibly striking hanging on a wall. Knowing that they date back to themid-1800smakes the detail and workmanship even more impressive to me.

From the research I have done, these works are attributed toEugène Jazet after Julien-Michel Gué and were published in Paris by Goupil & Vibert, circa 1844. Finding either one today is unusual. Finding the two companion pieces still together as a matched pair is what makes them especially interesting to me.

I’ve personally owned them for a little over 10 years, and I’m offering them together because I really believe they belong together.

HISTORY / PROVENANCE

I purchased these from European antique and art collectors here in Denison, Texas, and I have personally owned them for a little over 10 years.

I have kept them exactly as I acquired them.

They are still in their old, extremely heavy, handcrafted wooden frames with the original-style backing intact. I have never removed the prints from the frames and have made no attempt to clean, restore, refinish, reframe or otherwise alter them.

The glass is made of the antique "wavy" sugar glass, and one of the pieces is broken and needs replaced as the photos will show.

The other piece has perfect glass.

I believe preserving them in their current condition is much more important than trying to make them look newer.

THE ARTWORK

The pair consists of two large French religious scenes:

Le Dernier Soupir du Christdepicts the final moments of Christ on the cross.

Le Jugement Dernierdepicts the Last Judgment.

Based on the inscriptions and the research I have done, the works are associated with French artistJulien-Michel Guéand engraverEugène Jazet, with publication information identifyingGoupil & Vibert, Paris.

The prints appear to be large-format 19th-century aquatint/engraved works.

The photographs are an important part of this listing. Please study them closely, including the signatures, inscriptions, frames, backing, paper condition and construction.

FRAMES & ORIGINAL CONDITION

The frames themselves are impressive.

They are extremely heavy, substantial, handcrafted wooden frames and have considerable age. The construction, backing and overall appearance are consistent with old period framing.

The frames and backing are in remarkably good condition considering their age.

These pieces havenot been cleaned. I have intentionally left them exactly as I found them.

There is visible age-related toning, foxing and other normal signs of age to the paper.

The glass on one of the two pieces is broken. The glass on the other remains intact.

I have not attempted to remove or replace the broken glass because I did not want to disturb the artwork, backing or framing.

Please review all photographs carefully for condition.

INSPECTION IS WELCOME

Because these are old works of art, and because attribution, age, printing methods and originality can sometimes require hands-on examination, I welcome serious buyers to inspect them in person before purchasing.

You are more than welcome to bring an art dealer, appraiser, conservator, collector, museum professional or other expert of your choice.

I have nothing to hide. In fact, I would encourage a knowledgeable collector or expert to examine them in person. I think seeing these pieces up close is the best way to appreciate both their condition and the incredible amount of detail in the artwork.

PICKUP / SHIPPING

Because of the age, weight, original framing and glass, local pickup is strongly preferred, but I can arrange to take them to a local gallery or professional art shipper if needed.

I will not personally pack or ship these pieces.

If a buyer wants them shipped, I will take them to a qualified professional art dealer, gallery, professional art shipper or art-handling company of the buyer’s choice to have them properly packed and prepared for shipment.

The buyer will be responsible for all professional packing, shipping and insurance costs.

I simply do not want to risk damaging artwork that is approximately 180 years old by attempting to package it myself.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION / PLEASE READ

The information above regarding the artists, engraver, publisher, age, printing method, history and attribution is based on the markings visible on the artwork and the research I have personally done.

I am not an art authenticator or professional appraiser, and this information should be independently verified by the buyer.

Because of the age and nature of these pieces, I strongly encourage any serious buyer to inspect the artwork in person before purchasing and make their own determination regarding authenticity, attribution, age, condition and value.

The artwork is located inDenison, Texas, approximately one hour north of Dallas. I am available to show it in person, and you are welcome to bring an art dealer, appraiser, conservator, collector or other expert with you.

If you have any questions or need different photographs or close-ups of the artwork, signatures, markings, frames or backing, please contact me. I will be happy to provide whatever additional pictures or information I can.

The artwork is being offeredas-is, in its present original/as-found condition, and the buyer should rely on their own inspection and independent research when making a purchase decision.

Serious inquiries are welcome.
