Original January 4, 1832 printed and handwritten receipt from Granville, New York, documenting an early garden-seed consignment transaction between John H. Dean and Standish Backus.
The document records that Standish Backus received from John H. Dean one box of garden seeds, valued at $20.70, “as per Invoice,” to be sold on commission. Under the printed terms, Backus was to pay Dean or the bearer for all seeds sold, after deducting 25 percent, and return the unsold remainder.
The receipt is signed Standish Backus at lower right.
An excellent piece of early American horticultural, agricultural and mercantile ephemera. Particularly interesting because this is not simply a generic payment receipt—the printed form was specifically prepared for the consignment sale of garden seeds and preserves the actual commission arrangement between the parties.
The reverse contains period pencil figures/calculations.
I also researched the Standish Backus name. There are extensive Standish and Backus family papers dating as early as 1800 preserved by the New York Public Library, but I did not find enough evidence to safely identify the signer of this 1832 Granville document with a particular individual in that collection. I would therefore not make a genealogical connection in the listing without further documentation.
