1829 Sir Robert Harry Inglis 1p ALS Oxford University Election R Peel Ripon MP:

1829 AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY SIR ROBERT HARRY INGLIS RELATING TO THE FAMOUS OXFORD UNIVERSITY ELECTION OF 1829 AND THE OFFICIAL POLL BOOK OF THE CONTEST AGAINST ROBERT PEEL.

A highly desirable political autograph letter signed by Sir Robert Harry Inglis (1786-1855), written from Mrs Lawrence\'s, Studley Park, Ripon, on 17 August 1829 and addressed to Henry Adams Esq. LL.D., apparently identifiable with the Cork legal figure previously encountered in contemporary records.

The letter concerns publication of the official poll for the celebrated Oxford University Parliamentary Election of 1829, one of the most significant electoral contests of the age. Inglis replies to Adams\'s enquiry by confirming that the poll had been published by Payne & Foss, Pall Mall, London, and printed at the Clarendon Press, Oxford, adding that the volume was available in octavo format at a price of two shillings.

In part:

\"In reply to your question, whether the Poll at the Election for the University of Oxford be published, I beg to state that it was published by Payne & Foss, Pall Mall, London, having been printed at the Clarendon Press. It is in 8vo price 2/.\"

The publication referred to can be identified as:

\"An Authentic Copy of the Poll for a Member to Serve in the Present Parliament for the University of Oxford, in the Room of the Right Hon. Robert Peel, Resigned\"

printed at the Clarendon Press following the election of February 1829.

The historical importance of the letter lies in the election itself. The contest arose when Sir Robert Peel resigned his Oxford University seat after changing his position on Catholic Emancipation. Inglis became the anti-Emancipation candidate and defeated Peel in a fiercely contested and nationally important election. The letter therefore provides a contemporary reference to the official printed record of one of the most famous university elections of the nineteenth century.

The place of writing is equally interesting. The heading reads\"Mrs Lawrence\'s Studley Park, Ripon\", almost certainly referring to Sophia Elizabeth Lawrence of Studley Royal, the powerful political patron who exercised enormous influence over the Ripon constituency. This association is particularly noteworthy because Inglis had served as MP for Ripon immediately before becoming MP for Oxford University, linking the letter to both stages of his parliamentary career.

An excellent association item connecting:

• Sir Robert Harry Inglis
• Sir Robert Peel
• Oxford University Parliamentary Elections
• Catholic Emancipation Era Politics
• Clarendon Press, Oxford
• Ripon Parliamentary History
• Sophia Elizabeth Lawrence of Studley Royal
• Henry Adams LL.D. of Cork

Far superior to a routine signed letter, this is a content-rich political manuscript directly referencing the publication of the official poll book of the celebrated 1829 Oxford University election.
