Original November 21, 1828 issue of the Christian Advocate and Journal, and Zion’s Herald, published in New York for the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Vol. III, No. 12 — Whole No. 116.

This nearly 200-year-old newspaper contains significant early American historical content, including the “Ninth Report of the Vermont Colonization Society,” communicated at its annual meeting in Montpelier, Vermont, on October 17, 1828.

The report discusses the American colonization movement, Liberia, free Black settlers, the slave trade, slavery, conditions within the colony, and the death of Jehudi Ashmun, an important early figure in the history of Liberia.

Among the subjects discussed in the report are the population and government of the Liberian colony, Black colonial officials, agriculture, defense, the suppression of the slave trade, and contemporary attitudes toward slavery and colonization.

The newspaper contains additional religious, social and period news and commentary throughout, providing an extensive primary-source view of American life and thought in 1828.
