An early 19th-century Commonwealth of Massachusetts official appointment document, measuring about 9.25 x 7.5 inches, apparently the surviving top half only of a commission naming GARDNER WEAVER as Coroner in Bristol County. The printed heading reads “The Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” with a large paper-seal impression at left and period handwritten insertions in the blanks. Although incomplete, it remains a very displayable and appealing piece of Massachusetts state ephemera with strong visual presence.
The text appears to appoint Gardner Weaver, identified as “Gentleman,” to serve as Coroner “in our County of Bristol during Pleasure,” with the usual formal wording empowering him to perform the duties of that office. A faint endorsement on the reverse seems to note the commission and date, and the printed wording at bottom suggests a gubernatorial issue, likely from the James Sullivan administration period. Because the lower portion is missing, the full date and signatures are not fully present on this surviving section.
Condition is fair antique condition, with clear age wear: heavy fold lines, toning, edge loss, small holes, separation at folds, seal wear, and overall incompleteness from loss of the lower half. Even so, the main heading, seal area, and the key identification of GARDNER WEAVER and the CORONER office remain visible enough to make it attractive for collectors of Massachusetts documents, legal-history material, Bristol County items, and named early American paper.
