Jasper Hopper (June 10, 1770 – June 30, 1848) served as the Deputy Secretary of State for New York around 1801. Born in New York City, he was the grandson of a Dutch immigrant who settled on Manhattan Island in 1620. Displaying exceptional penmanship, Hopper began his career as a copying clerk in the Secretary of State's office at 18 and was promoted to Deputy Secretary two years later.
In 1802, Hopper relocated to Onondaga Hollow (now Onondaga Valley), New York, where he held several significant positions:
County Clerk: Appointed in 1802, serving until 1818, with a one-year interruption.
Postmaster: Served from 1803 to 1822.
Supreme Court Commissioner: Appointed in 1803.
Masonic Leadership: First Master of the Masonic lodge established in Onondaga Hollow in 1803.[link removed by ]+1sites.rootsweb.com+1
U.S. Marshal: Appointed in 1810.
State Assemblyman: Represented Onondaga County in 1806 and 1811.
Arsenal Keeper: Appointed in 1812.
Hopper was also a charter member and the first secretary of the Onondaga Academy, contributing to the construction of both the academy and the local Presbyterian church. He played a pivotal role in improving local infrastructure by overseeing state-funded road and bridge projects. Born in County Londonderry, Ireland, McClellan immigrated to New England during his childhood. After his father's death around 1757, his older brother brought him to Albany, New York, where he established himself as a merchant. In 1771, he married Jane Williams, with whom he had nine children. Revolutionary War Contributions
