1780 Revolutionary War Era Estate Receipt

Isaac Whitelock Estate Dr to Sarah M’Lean. For Yarn and Callico. Signed.

This is an original and complete 1780 handwritten estate debt receipt from Pennsylvania, issued during the heart of the Revolutionary War. It records a payment owed by the Estate of Isaac Whitelock (Whitlock) to Sarah MLean (M’Lean) for yarn and calico valued at 1 dollar. The document includes Sarah MLean’s clear period signature on the reverse.

The receipt reads:

“1780 Isaac Whitelock Estate Dr to Sarah M’Lean. To yarn and callico $1.00.”

Reverse docketed and signed “Sarah M’Lean.”

The spelling of “Callico,” the laid paper with visible chain lines, and the handwriting style are fully consistent with late 18th century mid-Atlantic estate documents.

⭐ HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

This receipt was created in 1780, one of the most difficult years of the Revolutionary War. Imported cloth was scarce because of British naval blockades. Local women often spun yarn and produced homespun linen to supply their communities. Small debts like this show the essential role women played in wartime domestic economy.

Estate settlements continued even as court systems were disrupted by militia service, disease, and wartime shortages. This receipt reflects the day-to-day functioning of civilian life during the American Revolution.

⭐ GENEALOGICAL IMPORTANCE

Both names on this document correspond to identifiable family clusters in southern Pennsylvania, especially in York County and Lancaster County, regions heavily settled by Scotch-Irish families. These areas produced large numbers of militia volunteers and were active supply corridors for Washington’s army.

Below are the two most probable genealogical matches for the individuals named.

---

⭐ SARAH M’LEAN (MCLEAN) – TWO PROBABLE IDENTITIES

1. Sarah McLean of Chanceford Township, York County, PA

A well-documented cluster of McLean, McLain, and M’Lean families appears in the 1770s and 1780s in Chanceford and Fawn townships. Women in these households frequently appear in estate papers as suppliers of yarn, linen, and small quantities of woven cloth. A Sarah McLean is listed in York County tax lists during the early 1780s.

2. Sarah McLean of Little Britain or Drumore Township, Lancaster County, PA

Lancaster County had a large Scotch-Irish population and many female textile producers. Multiple McLean households are documented there in the 1770s and 1780s. A Sarah M’Lain/McLean appears in probate-adjacent records in Drumore and Little Britain Townships shortly after 1780.

Either match aligns with the signature, occupation, and the textile nature of this transaction.

⭐ ISAAC WHITELOCK (WHITLOCK) – TWO PROBABLE IDENTITIES

1. Isaac Whitlock of Chanceford / Fawn Township, York County, PA (d. 1778–1779)

Tax and militia lists show an Isaac Whitlock present in the 1770s but absent by 1780, indicating death just before or during the war. A Whitlock estate in the county around 1779 settles multiple small local debts, which is consistent with this document.

2. Isaac Whitlock of Drumore Township, Lancaster County, PA (d. 1777–1779)

Whitlocks appear in 1769 and 1771 tax lists in Drumore Township but not in 1780 rolls. Lancaster probate activity around this period shows several estate settlements involving women supplying yarn and cloth.

Both Isaac Whitelock candidates lived in the same counties where the likely McLean households lived, making both genealogical paths plausible.

⭐ CONDITION

Original eighteenth century laid paper with visible chain and wire lines. Fold marks, minor edge wear, light toning, and small stains consistent with age. Ink remains legible. Signature of Sarah M’Lean is bold and clear.

Approximate size: about 9.5 inches by 4 inches.

⭐ A FINE EXAMPLE OF WOMEN’S ECONOMIC HISTORY IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD

Documents signed by women during the 18th century are uncommon. Receipts involving textile production during the wartime years are especially desirable for historical, genealogical, and museum researchers.
