Dating approximately to the late 1870s–1880s, these are impressive large-format photographs mounted on their original period card stock. Contemporary records document Neurdein albums containing closely related views of El Kantara, Biskra, Bougie and other Algerian locations during this period. The Neurdein brothers were among the important commercial photographers documenting Algeria and North Africa during the late 19th century.
The photographs provide a remarkable visual record of colonial-era Algeria, showing oases and palm groves, desert landscapes, villages and architecture, local inhabitants, camel and mule caravans, mosques, the El Kantara gorge, Biskra and its surroundings, and the harbor at Bougie.
Among the printed titles visible in the group are views of El Kantara, including camel and mule caravans arriving from the desert, the entrance to the El Kantara gorge, and panoramic views of Ahraouia; and Environs de Biskra, including Sidi Zerzour, the Route de Touggourt, an old fort, mosque, palm groves and other views. The Bougie panorama is titled “Quai de la Marine et Fort d\'Abd-El-Kader.”
Sizes: The photographs vary somewhat. The smaller examples are approximately 5 x 11½ inches on mounts approximately 10 x 17 inches; larger examples are approximately 6 x 11 inches on mounts approximately 12 x 16½ inches.
