This star sand is 100% natural, which means the package contains a mix of seashells, corals, dried seaweeds, broken star sand, natural sand, etc.It may also have a seawater-like smell, which might not be pleasant for everyone. The second picture is a closeup of the star-shaped grains.
Please note that you will not receive only star-shaped grains. We put in a lot of effort to sort out as many star-shaped grains as possible using two types of strainers, but perfectly star-shaped grains make up less than 30-35% of the total. The mix also includes some sun sand (Calcarina).
Q: What is star sand? A: Star sand is a unique biogenic sand composed of the microscopic skeletons of single-celled sea creatures belonging to the foraminifera group. This rare sand is exclusive to a limited area in Okinawa. Legend has it that star sand brings happiness, leading many to collect and cherish it as a symbol of good luck.
We are delighted to offer star sand collected from the pristine Hatoma Island in Okinawa. Once a year, the school children of Hatoma Elementary and Middle School, consisting of only 6 students(as of 2025) on the island, along with their parents, teachers, and community members, gather the star sand to raise funds for school activities through its sale.
Following the sand collection, a meticulous process unfolds. Over the course of a month, the sand is thoroughly washed, sun-dried, and meticulously sorted to isolate the enchanting star-shaped grains.
