Here we have a'RARE' Antique Mosher's 1889 Patented, BIRMINGHAM PLANE MFG. CO. No. 7 Jointer 'B' Plane. A previous owner has "restored" the plane by repainting in inside of the body, and, replacing the cutting iron with a Stanley version, and the lever cap with one from Sargent (marked '415' on the rear).Mosher's 1889 Patent was for his 'B' plane.You can see the Mosher patent frog with its twisted later lever and unique upside down'U' shaped tip. The original cutting iron with the 'B' Plane info. apparently went missing years ago (replaced with Stanley version as noted above.) Historical details about the Birmingham Plane Co. can be found in Roger K. Smith's book: "PATENTED TRANSITIONIAL 7 METALLIC PLANES IN AMERICLAM 1827-1927 (Vol. 1). And on page 190 you'll see a picture of this No.7 plane. Per the picture, apparently the tote and knob were made of beech and were grained and stained to look like Rosewood. This example has the beech tote but the finish was removed by an owner. I also see that there is a tight solid crack in the tote. The knob appears to have the heavy staining, and is NOT cracked.Allmoving parts operate smoothly.Plane has a very good mouth & nice smooth sole with NO corrosion or pitting. The body is only marked No 7 at the toe. NO owner initials. Plane weighs approx. 6 lbs. 5oz, unpackaged!Please review pics to confirm condition!
