Up for sale is a genuine and original British military badge featuring the royal cypher of King Edward VII (reigned 1901–1910).
Unlike pieces from the brief 1936 reign of Edward VIII, this authentic Edwardian badge displays the distinct "VII" Roman numerals entwined within the classic "ER" (Edwardus Rex) cypher, topped with the King's Crown. A fantastic, authentic piece for a collection of early 20th-century British militaria or royal badges.
- Era: Edwardian (1901–1910)
- Monarch: King Edward VII
The reverse is maker marked:
J.R. GAUNT LONDON
J.R. Gaunt was an important British manufacturer of military, governmental and ceremonial insignia.
Edward VIII reigned for less than one year in 1936 before his abdication. As a result, official and private-purchase insignia bearing his EVIIIR cypher was produced during an exceptionally short period.
This example is being identified conservatively as an Edward VIII Royal Cypher badge. No specific regiment or Royal Household appointment is being attributed without additional documentary evidence.
An unusual piece for a British militaria, royal cypher, Edward VIII, J.R. Gaunt or 1930s insignia collection.
