Up for your consideration is a removedautograph page signed by seven US senators sometime between March 4,1877- March 3, 1879. Most interesting is the connection with the CivilWar. Two signatures were signed by Confederate Generals John T. Morgan and MattRansom. Another is Confederate Major James B. Eustis, AAG for Generals:Johnston, Hood, Pemberton, Magruder, and Beauregard. Another is Senator SimonB. Conover, a surgeon in the Union medical department during the war. Anotheris Senator Roscoe Conkling, a powerful leader of the Radical Republicans duringthe Civil War and Reconstruction eras. Another is Senator Thomas F. Bayard, aprominent Wilmington, Delaware lawyer and Peace Democrat who actively opposedthe use of military force to suppress Southern secession. Bayard and his fatheradvocated for negotiated peace and helped organize a local militia. The lastsignature is Senator Jerome B. Chaffee, one of the founders of Denver,Colorado.
