Antique real photo postcard showing the original North End Boat Club clubhouse in Newburyport, Massachusetts, circa 1908.
The large waterfront clubhouse features a two-level wraparound porch with cross-braced wooden railings, ornamental porch supports, shingle siding and rooftop cupolas. A small sailboat-shaped weather vane appears above the central cupola. Two people stand together on the lower porch, while several small boats are visible on the ground in front of the building. A tall flagpole dominates the center of the scene.
The North End Boat Club was established in 1895 beside the Merrimack River. The property had previously been occupied by the Eben Manson Shipyard, an important part of Newburyport’s 19th-century shipbuilding industry. The organization was founded by fourteen members to promote yachting and other sports and became known locally as a working man’s club.
According to the North End Boat Club’s historical records, this early clubhouse lacked electricity and indoor plumbing in 1908. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1963 and subsequently replaced, making this postcard an important surviving visual record of the club’s original waterfront structure.
The reverse has an unused AZO real photo postcard back with four upward-pointing triangles surrounding the stamp box, a design generally associated with the early 20th century. There is no message, address, stamp or postmark. A small pencil price or collector notation appears near one corner.
An excellent piece of Newburyport maritime history featuring the original clubhouse, early recreational boating, wooden boat architecture and the city’s historic Merrimack River waterfront.
CONDITION
Good to fair antique condition with age and handling wear. The card has softened and worn corners, edge wear, light surface abrasions, scratches, scattered staining, discoloration and general age toning. The upper-right corner has a noticeable bend or crease, and there is additional wear around the borders.
The photographic image remains detailed and attractive, with the clubhouse, porch architecture, people, boats, flagpole and weather vane all clearly visible. The reverse is unused but has light soiling, age toning and a small pencil notation. Please examine both scans carefully for the complete condition.
