This postcard presents a dual image of New York’s City Hall and the newly developed underground railroad system, today recognized as the New York City Subway. The upper view depicts City Hall, completed in 1812, a Federal-style civic building located in lower Manhattan that has long served as the seat of New York’s municipal government. The lower illustration highlights the vaulted, tile-arched interior of the City Hall subway station, one of the first stations on the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) line, which officially opened in October 1904.
The City Hall station was designed with Guastavino tile vaults, skylights, chandeliers, and elegant curves, making it one of the most beautiful subway stations ever built. While it was eventually closed in 1945 due to its inability to accommodate longer trains, the station remains a legend in subway history and is sometimes opened for special tours.
This card, printed shortly after the subway’s debut, captures the sense of civic pride and technological advancement that New Yorkers felt at the dawn of the 20th century.
