Original rare WWII German side-lace ankle boots (Seitenschnürer), the pattern collectors refer to as the M37 SS side-lace boot. Matching pair, dated 1942.
Construction: natural tan-brown leather with smooth-grain quarters and rough-out vamps, off-white assembly stitching throughout. Brown-painted steel lace hooks and eyelets on the outer side opening. Black woven pull tape with red stripes at the rear of each shaft. Wood-pegged leather soles and stacked leather heels, never hobnailed.
Markings: both insteps are impressed 28 / 4 / 42 with a script maker logo in an oval, and 28 / 4 is repeated on each forefoot. The inner shafts carry matching ink stamps, 28 / 4 / 42 over a maker line reading [Wessels]/42.
Condition: mint never issued. The soles and pegging are crisp and the stitching is intact. There are honest storage scuffs to the heel counters, light soiling and small ink marks on the toes, and a few bent lace hooks. No laces. Sole length is 11 1/2 inches heel to toe, 7 inches tall.
Reference: this same pattern has been offered in a couple of dealers' websites.
Guaranteed original to the period.
