Original WWII-era German Munchen HDK House of art (HDK) military art print depicting a Soviet prisoner of war, identified by the original German caption as “Sowjetischer Gefangener” (Soviet Prisoner).
The portrait shows the Soviet soldier in uniform and field cap. The artwork is dated 19. Juli 41 (July 19, 1941) in the lower right, placing it during the opening weeks of the German-Soviet war.
The reverse retains both a handwritten German inscription and the original printed caption.
Printed German caption:
“19. Sowjetischer Gefangener.”
The accompanying text describes the prisoner's face as resembling an icon painting, followed by strongly ideological wartime language concerning Bolshevism. This wording should be understood in the context of German wartime propaganda from 1941 rather than as an objective description of the depicted prisoner.
The handwritten text on the reverse appears to be an earlier/manuscript version of essentially the same caption.
A particularly interesting surviving piece of Eastern Front military artwork, combining a dated portrait with its original German descriptive text. Excellent historical material relating to the Soviet-German campaign, POW history, wartime art and propaganda.
Please see all photographs for the exact condition. Shows expected age toning, handling and storage wear consistent with a period paper item. Sold as shown.
