ORIGINAL CIRCA 1918 WWI-ERA MILITARY PHOTOGRAPH — IDENTIFIED KENTUCKY MARINE — DIRECT FAMILY PROVENANCE
This is an original circa 1918 military photograph measuring approximately 3½" x5¼". The photograph is printed on a very thick, rigid, postcard-like photographic board, substantially heavier and thicker than a standard paper photograph.
The photograph shows a single serviceman posed in uniform, with the same American flag and flag stand visible at the edge of the frame that appears in a companion photograph from this collection (of the same man with a fellow serviceman), confirming both were taken at the same studio sitting. The man is identified as Graham B. Cowherd of Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
Graham B. Cowherd — WWI Marine Veteran and Kentucky National Guard Officer
Graham Brown Cowherd has a particularly well-documented military history. His death certificate records his World War I service, and Kentucky National Guard historical records provide additional detail: Cowherd enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in April 1918 at age 17 and served overseas with the 6th Regiment, Marines. He was wounded in action on November 10, 1918 — one day before the Armistice — and was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart.
After the war, Cowherd returned to Hopkinsville and became active in the Kentucky National Guard. By 1937 he had risen to the rank of Captain and Company Commander, serving with Company C, 113th Quartermaster Regiment. The 1938National Guard of the State of Kentuckyhistorical publication identifies Cowherd and documents his earlier Marine Corps service and combat wound. The uniform shown in this portrait is consistent with his later National Guard service.
Provenance
This photograph comes directly through the family of Graham B. Cowherd. I am a direct descendant of Cowherd, and this photograph has remained in the family collection for generations. This is the first time it will be offered outside the Cowherd family. Additional identified photographs from this collection are being offered as separate listings.
This is an especially compelling piece given Cowherd's documented WWI Marine service, his combat wound and Purple Heart, and his rise to Captain in the Kentucky National Guard — a well-rounded, verifiable military career spanning two decades.
