Beautiful vintage Russian Kholui lacquer miniature box, made in the USSR and featuring a detailed hand-painted village scene surrounded by delicate gold ornamentation.
The colorful miniature depicts traditional Russian architecture beside water, including churches and buildings, trees, swirling clouds, hills and a small boat. Fine gold detailing frames the scene and continues around the exterior of the box.
The underside is marked in gold:
- ХОЛУЙ / Kholui
- Made in USSR
- Gold bird emblem
The artwork is also artist-signed along the lower portion of the painted scene.
The box has a glossy black lacquer exterior and a striking red lacquer interior, with a hinged lid.
Because it is marked Made in USSR, this piece dates to the Soviet period, prior to the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. Hand-painted Kholui lacquer miniature box, handmade in the USSR.
Approximate measurements are shown in the photos; the box is roughly 3 1/2" x 3".
A beautiful example of Soviet-era Russian miniature lacquer art and a wonderful piece for a collection of Russian folk art, lacquerware, decorative boxes or USSR collectibles.
