A commemorative desk souvenir from the Soviet era, manufactured at the Southern Pipe Metallurgical Plant (YuTMZ / YuTZ, Nikopol) and presented on September 23, 1972, to an employee named P. A. Zhelezny by the staff of the Mechanical Repair Department (RMU).This information is written as a congratulatory message on a souvenir.
The object is a complex, multi-part composition with distinct ideological and industrial undertones:• Mounted on one side of the Plexiglas "sail" is a metal award badge featuring a bas-relief of V. I. Lenin and a red banner.• The reverse side bears the YuTMZ plant emblem, depicting smoking factory chimneys and finished pipe products radiating outward like sunbeams.• Two circular miniatures are set into the center of the acrylic: an original black-and-white photograph of a man in uniform (likely P. A. Zhelezny himself) and a color image of a Soviet-era cityscape (presumably the Opera House or the Palace of Culture in the city of Nikopol, Ukraine, where the plant is located).
The souvenir was created using a combination of materials typical of Soviet visual propaganda and applied arts:• Stela ("sail"): Thick cast acrylic (Plexiglas). During the Soviet era, it was very popular for skilled factory workers to cut, shape, and polish this material into commemorative gifts.• Base and decorative washer: Likely brown Bakelite (carbolite)—an early type of thermosetting plastic. A commemorative inscription has been applied to the Bakelite slab via hand engraving (using a burin). • Central mounting element: Chrome- or nickel-plated alloy (silumin or brass), hemispherical in shape.• Medallions: Stamped metal (aluminum or light alloy), photo paper under a protective layer, miniature color paper insert.• Fastener: Metric steel screw.Display height: 12 inches (30 cm).
