What an artful fellow we have here! This is a hand carved hardwood duck from the Smith & Hawken line of “My Name Is” duck figurines. This particular shape and body style is “Curtis,” as further indicated by his wooden hang tag that is tied with raffia around his neck. This vintage piece is from the Smith and Hawken garden stores, made during their independent era, made before they were bought out by Target brand stores in 2009. I believe that later on, Target offered the ducks in resin, but this is a handmade, artisanal piece from Indonesia, where local crafters were contracted to carve and paint these whimsical works of art. This example stands just under 8” tall and is finished in a distressed red paint, its handmade quality making it a unique piece of art. Intentionally rustic, it is in excellent condition!
