The Schrade Old Timer line became well known for its practical, traditionally styled American pocketknives. The 194OT was introduced during the 1970s and remained in production until the original Schrade company's closure in 2004.

Unlike an ordinary slip-joint pocketknife, this model incorporates a positive locking mechanism. The blade locks open and cannot be folded closed without deliberately moving the lock release sideways—a desirable feature for collectors and users who appreciate traditional American locking pocketknives.
