Vintage 10-piece hand-painted Russian matryoshka nesting doll set featuring Russian and Soviet leaders and rulers spanning centuries of history.
The figures progress chronologically from the most recent leader on the largest doll to the earliest ruler on the smallest:
Boris Yeltsin • Mikhail Gorbachev • Leonid Brezhnev • Nikita Khrushchev • Joseph Stalin • Vladimir Lenin • Czar Nicholas II • Catherine the Great • Peter the Great • Ivan the Terrible
The largest Yeltsin doll measures approximately 10" tall, while the tiny Ivan the Terrible measures only about 0.4".
With Yeltsin as the outermost and most recent leader, the set dates to the 1990s. Each wooden figure is individually hand painted with distinctive portrait details, clothing, symbols and historical imagery.
All 10 pieces are present, including the remarkably tiny innermost figure. Also included is the handwritten identification list that was found stored inside the set.
A striking vintage display piece combining Russian matryoshka folk art, political memorabilia, Soviet/USSR history and Imperial Russian history.
