The case is modeled very realistically after a natural shell, with deeply textured, irregular growth layers across the exterior rather than a simplified or symmetrical shell design. The interior metal is also fully modeled with the contours and texture of a shell and has a contrasting warm gold-tone finish.
Inside is a removable padded fabric insert, designed to sit securely beneath small retaining tabs around the interior edge. The insert is original to the construction of the case and is not glued in place. Its fitted design suggests the box was intended for presentation or storage of jewelry, possibly pearls, although the original retailer or jewelry maker is unknown.
The case has a substantial integrated metal hinge at the narrow end. It is unmarked, and the exact metal composition and maker are unknown.
Condition: Vintage preowned condition with surface wear and variation to the metal finish consistent with age.
