Striking large vintage brass swan sculpture covered almost entirely in intricate hand-worked engraving. Floral, foliate, geometric and buta/paisley-like motifs create extraordinary surface detail against a rich dark bronze-toned ground. At approximately 11.5” long and nearly 4 lbs, this substantial piece has the presence of decorative metal art rather than an ordinary brass figurine.
DESCRIPTION
A striking vintage brass swan sculpture whose appeal lies as much in its remarkable metalwork as in its graceful sculptural form.
Nearly every visible surface of the substantial brass body has been extensively hand worked with intricate engraved/incised decoration. Large buta/paisley-like forms are surrounded by stylized flowers, leaves, scrolling foliage, crosshatching, geometric borders and hundreds of tiny repeated linear details.
The exceptionally dense ornamentation is reminiscent of the richly patterned decorative traditions found throughout South Asian metalwork and textile arts. The larger curved leaf or teardrop forms resemble traditional buta/paisley motifs, while some of the smaller repeated floral and foliate elements have the appearance of buti-style motifs.
The elaborate layering of paisley-like forms, flowers, leaves and fine filler patterns also creates a visual effect reminiscent of traditional mehndi/henna artwork.
These terms are used to describe the visual character of the ornamentation only. No specific cultural symbolism, maker or country of manufacture is being attributed to this unmarked piece.
More than a decorative bird figurine, this substantial piece reads as sculptural metal art. The dramatic looping neck and exceptionally dense hand-worked ornamentation give it presence from across a room, while the tiny floral, foliate, geometric and paisley-like details reward close inspection.
COLOR & SURFACE
The sculpture reads overall as a rich dark bronze to antiqued brass-brown, rather than solid black.
A black or near-black applied surface treatment remains particularly visible within recessed areas, creating dramatic contrast with the warmer exposed brass of the extensive hand-worked decoration. Depending on lighting and viewing angle, the surface shifts visually from deep bronze-brown to almost black in the darkest areas.
The underside of the beak provides particularly good evidence of an applied dark coating. Similar pieces are sometimes described as enameled brass; however, the exact coating material has not been independently identified. It is therefore described conservatively as an enamel-like, lacquered or patinated dark surface treatment rather than definitively claiming true enamel.
CONSTRUCTION
The sculpture is hollow yet surprisingly substantial, weighing nearly four pounds.
The swan does not open and is not a box, planter or container.
The underside has a separate base plate with feet/contact points and two irregular manufacturing/access or vent openings associated with its hollow construction.
No maker’s mark or definitive country-of-origin marking was located.

The underside shows expected display wear and two irregular manufacturing/access or vent openings associated with the hollow construction.
