The Minnequa University Club, located at 2100 Lake Avenue, represents a significant chapter of local mid-century history during the era when the city was heavily driven by the Colorado Fuel and Iron (CF&I) steel mill.
HISTORYThe Minnequa Club & Lake Recreation
The club was a members-only social hub situated right off Lake Avenue. As advertised on the matchbook, it offered a restaurant, banquet hall, a swimming pool, and a lake for boating and water skiing.
Lake Minnequa: The lake referenced was originally an artificial 160-acre reservoir created in 1872 by the Central Colorado Development Company (which became CF&I). It was built to hold water diverted from the St. Charles River to cool the local steel mill's blast furnaces.
Recreational Pivot: Around the turn of the 20th century, the lake evolved into a recreational gathering space. The Minnequa Club operated on its shores, giving members exclusive access to the water sports listed on the cover. Today, the lake is maintained as a public park.
