Description:
Vintage mid-century cast brass pipe stand featuring a stylized African warrior figure in a dynamic lunging pose. He holds an engraved shield in one hand and grips a branching stem in the other, which divides into six U-shaped cradles for holding pipes. It’s a striking sculptural piece that works equally well as a functional pipe rack, a jewelry or ring holder, or a decorative object.
Details:
• Hand-chased geometric designs on the shield, including concentric circles and hatching
• Finely detailed figure with a pleated loincloth, arm and wrist bands, and expressive face
• A small snake’s head detail at the end of the branching stem
• Textured, naturalistic base, attached with two slotted screws underneath
• Solid, heavy cast brass with a warm, aged patina
Measurements: 6.25” tall, 6.5” wide, 2.5” deep at the base.
Condition: Good vintage condition with a natural patina consistent with age. A few of the thin pipe cradles are slightly bent or twisted and could be gently reshaped. There’s a small original casting line at one ankle, which is a flaw from the casting process, not a crack or repair, and the figure is completely solid. Some light verdigris (green patina) in the recesses of the loincloth.
Unmarked.
Unsigned, but in the manner of the stylized African figures popularized by the Vienna workshops in the mid-20th century. Please see photos for full details and condition.
