A matched pair of Mexican milagro retablos, each a shallow panel clad in hand-hammered copper and faced with a hand-chased brass ground set with milagros. One is built around the Crucifixion, the other around a large flaming Sacred Heart. Each measures 5 x 6 x 1 in, hangs from an iron ring, and both came from El Trocadero, Guadalajara\'s Sunday antiques market. They date to c. 1970s–1990s and are sold together as one pair.
The work
Milagros (\"miracles\") are small votive charms offered in thanks or petition: an arm, a leg or a heart stands for the healing prayed for, and a kneeling figure for the faithful who asked.
The Crucifixion panel has the corpus of Christ, flanked by two kneeling devotees. A dagger-pierced heart sits in a burst of rays at upper left, with an arm beneath it. A large flaming Sacred Heart fills the lower left, and a standing figure and a second dagger-pierced heart sit at lower right.
The Sacred Heart panel pairs its large flaming heart with a dagger-pierced heart at upper right. Below are a leg, a kneeling man at prayer, a standing Virgin, a standing figure and a reclining animal.
The brass grounds are chased freehand with scrolls, spirals, rays, stippled borders and drop-shaped flames, cut with scalloped edges and nailed to the copper. Every milagro is nailed in place by hand.
Measurements
Each panel: 5\" W x 6\" H x 1\" D (12.7 x 15.2 x 2.5 cm), plus the hanging ring
Condition
Both have a warm, even copper patina, darker in places, with small dents and a lifted tab at one corner of the copper cladding. The rings show light surface rust. The canvas backs carry old stains, and one shows faint pencil sketch lines, so the canvas was reused. The brass panels are pieced from several sheets, with seams visible as made. All milagros are secure.
Appraisal
Gallery replacement value: $325, what it would cost to replace this pair through a gallery, for insurance and estate purposes.
One photograph shows the pieces staged in a setting, provided only to help you picture them on display. The retablos are unaltered and untouched, and photographs of the actual pieces are included. Only the two retablos are included.
