A charming porcelain figurine of a colonial couple, from the years just after World War II. The gentleman stands in a rust red coat, yellow breeches, and gilded vest with his black tricorn hat tucked under his arm. The lady sits beside him in a rose pink gown with a turquoise skirt and gold details. Pierced openwork in her sleeves and in the chair back gives it a delicate look.
The base is stamped in red MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN. In February 1947, occupation authorities ordered export goods marked this way, and the occupation ended in April 1952, so pieces with this stamp date from that short window. These hand painted couples were a popular export and are still a favorite with collectors. It has an open hole in the base, which is typical of hollow molded porcelain figurines.
Condition is used and I’ve photographed all of it. The gold trim shows rubbing and some loss. There’s tan toning on the base and white areas, a few small brown specks, and a little white crusty glaze residue at the bottom edge of the base. No chips or cracks that I can find.
The figurine stands about 4 inches tall and about 4 inches across the base. I pack it carefully and ship within 1-2 days. Message me with any questions.
