Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print created in 1832-33 by the renowned artist of the Edo period, Utagawa (Ando) Hiroshige (1797-1858), and reprinted around 1946-1948 by Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho publishing company..

The printed is titled \"Kawasaki: A Ferry on the Rokugo River” (Kawasaki rokugo watashibune) from the series “52 Stations of the Tokaido Road” (Tokaido gojūsan tsugi no uchi). This series is the first Tokaido Road Stations series Hiroshige published in 1832-34, usually called “Great Tokaido”. It had such a tremendous success that he created 30 more series on the same subject with different format and scenery. However, this one remains the most famous and celebrated of his work.

Kawasaki was No.3 station on Tokaido Road. To get to the station the travelers had to cross the Rokugo river by ferry boat. It was a unofficial border between Edo (Tokyo) and the rest of the Japan. We see on the ferryboat a group province merchants bringing their goods to Edo and women going to pray at the Heigenji Temple. On the bank of the river next group of travelers are waiting for their turn. A man is paying his fare at the tollbooth. This is very typical of Hiroshige art that usually combined light humor with melancholy and the sense of loneliness.

The Tokaido was one of the Five Routes constructed under Tokugawa Ieyasu, a series of roads linking the historical capital of Edo with the rest of Japan. The Tokaido connected Edo with the then-capital of Kyoto. The most important and well-traveled of these, the Tōkaidō travelled along the eastern coast of Honshū, thus giving rise to the name Tōkaidō (\"Eastern Sea Road\"). Along this road, there were 53 different post stations, which provided stables, food, and lodging for travelers. Since Tokugawa shogunate eased the domestic travel restrictions in the late 18th – early 19th centuries, the journey from Edo to Kyoto and from Kyoto to Edo became very popular – hence the popularity of the “52 Stations of the Tokaido” series. Hokusai was the first one who came with the idea and created his version. Hiroshige followed his success with his own series that became even more favored.

The print was made using the traditional Japanese woodblock technique. It was re-cut a reprinted by Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho publishers in 1946-1948. The company was established by the sosaku-hanga artist Kihachiro Okuyama who published his own prints and also remakes of the classical era famous artists. The print exceptionally well done and very finely printed. It bears a Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho Publisher stamp on the right margin.
