Vintage Indonesian Toba Batak Tribe Ceremonial Medicine Container of Carved Bone and Wood. The medicine container was purchased by the seller in an antique shop in Indonesia about 30 years ago. The container is made of intricately carved bone and the sides of the container consist of finely carved and polished wood. The bone is intricately carved with a calendar representing the days of use and non-use of the tube's contents, which would be herbs and medicines used by the Toba people. The bone is very intricately carved with images of two serpents and an intricate border to the detailed calendar. Photos illustrate how a wood peg holds the wood carving that seals one side of the bone container; and photos illustrate the removal of the peg and one of the wood carvings to show the empty bone within which the medicine would be stored. The wood carving on the other side of the container is fixed and cannot be removed. The container measures 9 inches in length and 4 inches in height; and it weighs 5.9 oz. The seller has enjoyed this beautiful antique container for 30 years and is willing now to pass it on to another owner. The price reflects the quality of the carvings and art work.
