Item: Vintage Hand-Carved Wood Santos / Religious Figure Statue
Description:
Up for sale is a fascinating, hand-carved wooden statue of a religious figure, likely a Santos, Madonna, or female saint.
This is a classic piece of colonial-style folk art with an appearance of significant age.
Key Features:
Craftsmanship: Entirely hand-carved from a single piece of wood, showing distinct tool marks and a primitive, expressive aesthetic.
Depiction: A standing female figure with shoulder-length dark hair, wearing a patterned red and gold sash over a striking blue robe. The robe is decorated with a detailed pattern of small gold dashes or stars and gold trim down the front.
Pose: The figure has a unique, asymmetrical pose. Her left arm appears to be hidden within the robe, while her right arm (which is an applied separate piece of wood, a common Santos feature) is extended forward with an open palm in a gesture of benediction, teaching, or receiving.
Materials/Finish: Carved wood with original hand-painted gesso and tempera-style finish.
The paint shows a beautiful, authentic aged patina and crackle.
