Hand-Carved Black Stone Turtle Figurine – Etched Folk Art Sculpture – Inscribed
A distinctive hand-carved stone turtle sculpture featuring a bold, stylized silhouette, angular legs, a flattened head, and an intricately etched geometric shell design.
This charming small-scale animal carving has a dark charcoal-to-black stone appearance, accented by pale engraved lines and circular markings. Its simplified, almost abstract form gives it a striking folk art character, making it an interesting collectible for admirers of traditional stone carving, handmade animal sculptures, and vintage decorative objects.
Design & Craftsmanship
The turtle features a broad, low-profile body with four angular legs, a projecting head, circular engraved eyes, and a geometric arrangement of lines and dots across its back.
The shell decoration appears to have been incised into the stone, creating a contrast between the dark body and the lighter markings.
Subtle surface irregularities and visible carving marks contribute to its handmade character.
Possible Origin & Artistic Influence
The sculpture shares certain stylistic characteristics with traditional North American stone animal carvings, including examples described as Inuit and First Nations folk art.
Similar works are sometimes produced from soapstone, a relatively soft natural stone traditionally used for carving decorative and sculptural objects.
However, the exact cultural origin, artist, age, and place of manufacture of this particular piece have not been established.
It is offered as a hand-carved stone folk art sculpture without a confirmed cultural attribution.
Inscription / Possible Artist Signature
An intriguing handwritten or incised inscription appears on the underside of the sculpture.
Some portions may resemble the words “Goway Hay Gobon” or a similar spelling. The writing is difficult to decipher, and this interpretation is not confirmed.
The inscription could represent an artist’s signature, a personal name, or another identifying mark.
The precise meaning and identity of the possible maker remain unknown.
Please examine the detailed photographs of the underside.
