TITLE / FORMAT:Dharma: Children and Animals Theme.ART FORM: Multi-colored Hand-Engraved and Tinted Paper Cuts (Jianzhi / 剪纸), Yuxian Style (Hebei Province).DATE OF PRODUCTION: Circa 1970s – 1980s (State-Export Era). Undated as issued.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:This is a beautifully preserved, authentic mid-century Chinese state-export presentation album titled "Classic Chinese Paper Cut Works." Produced during the peak of China's late-20th-century cultural diplomacy era, this luxury portfolio was designed explicitly for international distribution to showcase traditional Chinese folk motifs through an innovative, durable design. The front cover features a vibrant, high-gloss illustration of a celestial child flying atop a brilliantly colored auspicious bird (phoenix/crane), symbolizing universal harmony and peace. Bordering the edge of the cover is the classical bilingual diplomatic slogan: "The world resounds with joy and peace" paired with the original Chinese phrase "四海笙歌报太平" (Sihai shengge bao taiping—"The four seas resound with songs of joy, heralding peace").The album is constructed with 10 heavy-gauge paperboard leaves featuring brilliant gold-gilded edges. It utilizes a unique, protective interleaved design:
- Left-Hand Pages: Plain white/cream backing board designed to isolate and protect the artwork when the album is closed.
- Right-Hand Pages: Features an innovative "window art" presentation. Rather than fragile paper cuts, the vibrant, multi-colored folk artwork is silk-screened using high-density, opaque inks directly onto a clear, rigid plastic/acetate overlay.
- The Background Frame: When the clear acetate sheet is flipped down, the artwork aligns perfectly over a printed background on the backing board consisting of a traditional circular window/moon-gate frame accented with elegant gold coloring along the bottom edge.
Motifs & ThemesThe interior artwork highlights classical, highly auspicious Chinese folklore themes, most notably the iconic "Children and Fish" (Liannian Youyu) motif, which visually represents the historic wish for a surplus of wealth, health, and prosperity year after year.
.THEMATIC ANALYSIS & ICONOGRAPHY:
The portfolio represents a curated masterclass in traditional Chinese homophonic rebuses (visual puns) and folklore, systematically tracing a narrative arc of domestic harmony, material abundance, and societal triumph. The nine-cut collection features a unified children-and-animal motif, including:
- Lian Nian You Yu (连年有余): Child catching fish in a lotus pond, symbolizing continuous surplus and financial abundance year after year.
- Wu Zi Duo Lian (五子夺莲): Five children competing harmoniously for a lotus flower, representing sibling unity and the arrival of the Five Blessings.
- Chui Xiao Yin Feng (吹箫引凤): A youth playing a flute or flying a kite to attract a soaring phoenix, signifying supreme harmony and spiritual fulfillment.
- Lian Zhong San Yuan (连中三元): Children with lotus plants, lanterns, and a royal consultant, celebrating academic excellence and consecutive triumphs in the Imperial Civil Service examinations.
- Ji Qing You Yu / Wang Zi Cheng Long (望子成龙): Joyous children interacting with auspicious chimes, bats, and riding a magnificent multi-colored dragon, embodying a parent's ultimate prayer for their child to rise to greatness, nobility, and leadership.
CULTURAL CONTEXT:
Commissioned during China’s late 20th-century cultural export period, portfolios of this caliber were assembled by state-managed publishing bodies—such as the Foreign Languages Press or the China International Book Trading Corporation—exclusively for high-level diplomatic presentation, cross-cultural exchange, or premium distribution through state-run Friendship Stores.
Ink Transfer / Ghosting: There is very minor, light ink ghosting/fading from the acetate artwork onto the underlying paperboard backgrounds. This is typical for books of this era and construction, presenting as a faint shadow image on the board that does not detract from the overall display value of the art
