Beautiful vintage Chinese carved wood figure depicting Shou Lao (Shouxing), the traditional Chinese God of Longevity, recognizable by his elongated forehead, long beard and staff.
This particularly interesting example appears to have been creatively carved from a naturally irregular piece of root/burl-type wood, incorporating the knots, grain and organic contours of the wood into the sculpture. The natural root formation creates the rustic base and makes this a truly individual decorative piece.
The carving has a warm variegated brown finish with darker areas accentuating the facial features, beard, robe, staff and natural wood grain.
Approximate height: 15\" to top of staff.
Condition: Vintage pre-owned condition with natural irregularities, age-related wear, checking/cracks and variations inherent to the wood. There is a small repaired area on the top of the head where there was previously an area of wood loss. It has been filled and color-matched to blend with the surrounding wood. Please see the close-up photo.
The naturally formed base is somewhat uneven, so the figure has a slight wobble if touched but stands upright on its own.
