Up for sale is an authentic, highly collectible piece of post-WWII history: an original handmade brass souvenir trinket tray from 1947.
This artifact was commissioned during the Allied occupation of Germany for a U.S. service member stationed in the American Zone. It specifically commemorates an official rest and recuperation (R&R) ski trip into neutral Switzerland, which was organized by the military to boost troop morale after the war.Detailed Engravings:• Top Inscription: 7736 LEAVE CENTER (SWITZERLAND) — This refers directly to the official U.S. Army 7736th Recreation Center Unit, the administrative group tasked with operating the dedicated military \"Swiss Express\" leave trains.
• Center Artwork: A beautifully detailed, hand-etched illustration depicting an alpine skier navigating a slope against a sharp backdrop of mountain peaks.
• Bottom Inscription: SOUVENIR of KARLSRUHE, GERMANY 1947 — Denotes the occupation base where the soldier was stationed.Condition & Craftsmanship:• Authentic Patina: The tray has been left completely unpolished to preserve its original, historic finish. Keeping the natural aging intact is highly preferred by militaria collectors and protects the delicate lettering.
• Artisan Technique: The text and imagery are executed in a classic, hand-stamped \"wrigglework\" etching style.
• Trench Art Characteristics: The reverse side of the tray shows prominent planishing (hammer) marks from the local artisan shaping the metal sheet by hand. As is typical for authentic, locally made post-war souvenirs of this era, there are no factory maker\'s marks or stamps.
This is an excellent display piece for collectors of WWII militaria, U.S. Army occupation history, vintage alpine skiing memorabilia, or unique trench art.
