This listing pertains to a vintage to antique Japanese brass lantern with paper inserts. The lantern has a double door and a ring on the top for carrying.
The lantern is marked on the base. To the best of my knowledge the markings state the following. The kanji to the far right appears to reference a date of around April 1847, in the Edo Period. However, upon consulting with an Asian antiques expert it is my understanding this lantern more likely dates to the 1920s-1930s, as the types of metal use and pin fasteners in the base aren't really seen in the Edo period.
The central kanji references a Buddhist temple (専宗寺)Senjo-ji. This could be Senso-ji in Toyko, but I'm not certain about that.
The kanji on the left appears to reference the lantern was made by someone with the name of 竹, or bamboo.
The lantern is about 12 inches tall and measures just under 8-1/2 inches across. It weighs 1 pound, 13.8 ounces.
The lantern was found at the estate of a US military person in Southeast Michigan who had been stationed in both Japan and Korea post WW2.
The lantern is in good condition overall with some aged patina to the brass components. Please see photos and feel free to ask questions.
