Vintage promotional brochure for the Black Dog Hotel, a historic seventeenth-century inn on St. Mary Street in Weymouth, England.
Front cover titling reads \"Black Dog Hotel (Prop.: Mr. and Mrs. H. Wardell) St. Mary Street, Weymouth Phone 437\" above a black-and-white line illustration of the inn façade with hanging sign and street-level shopfronts.
A caption beneath the illustration identifies the property as a \"Historic XVIIth Century Inn,\" emphasizing the building\'s seventeenth-century origins and traditional character.
One interior panel features a humorous verse titled \"The Bartender Knows,\" presented in prose-style stanzas about the bartender\'s familiarity with local patrons, their stories, and their drinking habits.
The central panel presents a comic drinking poem headed \"Retrospect,\" beginning \"The Horse and Mule live 30 years / And nothing knows of wine and beers,\" contrasting the brief sober lives of animals with the longer lives of humans who enjoy spirits.
Additional verses in \"Retrospect\" describe goats, sheep, cows, dogs, cats, and hens as strictly dry animals and end with the lines about \"sinful-ginful-rum-soaked men\" living to three-score years and ten and \"some of us, the mighty few\" staying \"pickled\" into their nineties.
The back panel repeats the \"Retrospect\" poem in full under the same heading, with printer credit \"JEFFERY BROS. OF WEYMOUTH\" at the bottom margin.
