Charming antique Nash Halloween postcard featuring a young woman performing the traditional Halloween apple-peel fortune-telling ritual, with a black cat seated beside her and additional black cat motifs decorating her dress.
The front reads:
“At Twelve O’clock on Halloween
Throw an Apple peel my Sweet Dame
And the Letter which is plainly seen
Is the Initial of your Marriage Name.”
A wonderful example of early Halloween divination imagery, reflecting the old custom of tossing an apple peel and interpreting the shape as the initial of a future spouse.
Card features attractive embossed detailing and is marked with the Nash emblem/design number at the lower left.
Postally used with original one-cent stamp and handwritten correspondence on the reverse.
Condition: Antique condition with visible age-related wear including corner and edge wear, light surface wear, toning, and general handling wear. Reverse has handwriting and postal markings. Please review all photos carefully for full condition.
