Lot of 8 vintage 1970s "Domino" modular puzzle planters by Programma Vastill — designed by Prof. D. Chiaudrero, made in Canada (marked on the underside with designer name and patent number). Self-watering interlocking planters in the classic space age style: the puzzle-piece shapes link together to build planter walls, windowsill runs, or freestanding clusters in any configuration.
New old stock from an Ontario hardware store — these sat on the shelf in the 1970s and then in attic storage for decades. Several still carry the original hardware store price tags (25 and 99 cents!) and original Vastill "Self Watering Planters" foil labels. A fun time-capsule detail for a collector.
The lot: 4 yellow, 3 white, 1 orange (the larger size). Standard planters approx. 5.5" L x 3.5" W x 3.5" H with reservoir; orange approx. 7.75" x 7.75" x 3.75" with reservoir. Note: 4 of the 8 include the bottom reservoir tray (2 yellow, 1 white, and the orange); the others are the planter tops only, which still display and plant beautifully.
Condition: honest old-stock condition — shelf wear, light scratches, and some sticker residue from decades of storage, but no cracks or chips. They'll clean up well. Please see all photos.
These rarely come to market — only a handful of documented sales in the past 15+ years. A great find for collectors of 1970s plastic design, space age decor, or anyone who wants the coolest planters on the windowsill.
Please see all photos as they form part of the description. Questions welcome.
