Vintage 1960s Cheyenne Old Style Dance Regalia Set: Wool vest and leggings (ribbon trimmed), ribbon and studded trade cloth breach-cloth, two handmade shirts. (These are adult M/L but see below for specific dimentsions.) This set is styled after the historic transition era ofcirca 1900, (see included photo examples) utilizing premium wool trade cloth, ribbon work, and traditionalpatterns. Perfect for Old Style Powwow dancers, historical re-enactors, orWestern arts collectors.
Distinctive Features of 1900-Era Cheyenne Wool Regalia

  • Circa 1900 dance regalia represents a critical transitional era in Plains Indianhistory, where traditional aesthetics beautifully adapted to include Europeantrade goods. Following forced reservation confinement in the late 19th century, the Cheyenne increasingly substituted traditional deerskin or elk hide with heavy wool broadcloth -- frequentlyreferred to as trade cloth --for their ceremonialand social dance garments.

  • The Fabric: Dancers utilized high-quality woven wool, mostly in deep navy blue or vibrant scarlet red. A hallmark of this era was utilizing the un-dyed, white selvage edge of the fabric as a prominent decorative border but then in some instances the border was trimmed in more colorful ribbon on the hems of dresses, skirts, or aprons.
  • Men's Attire: Men wore heavy wool hip-lengthleggings (often bound with contrasting ribbon or fringe along the outerseams) paired with a matching wool breech-cloth or apron.

This outfitwas meticulouslyhandmade with excellent attention to period-accurate detail for use inthe mid-century era for Powwow or hobbyist use and has been carefully stored for decades. It beautifullycaptures the historic 1900-era Cheyenne aesthetic using creative,period-correct vintage materials.The fabric is sturdy, clean, and free of rips, or smoke odors.

    • Navy Wool Leggings: Ingeniously crafted from vintage 100% wool navy bell-bottom trousers, converted into traditional hip-length dance leggings with side belt loops and features classic ribbon-trimmed side flaps.

    Condition Note

    This set is in excellent vintage condition havingbeen kept in clean, dry storage for roughly 60 years. The wool is sturdy withno major moth damage, tracking, or dry rotting. The brass studs retain abeautiful vintage patina. No smoke or musty odors. (The vest has a couple of insignificant holes that do not detract from the overall appearance or functionality. Because it's wool (with cotton lining) the vest requres dry cleaning which has not been done since being put into storage.)
