Vintage McCoy Pottery \"The Seamen\'s Bank for Savings\" Sailor Coin Bank, WWII Era (c. 1940s)
This is the well-known promotional coin bank made by McCoy Pottery for The Seamen\'s Bank for Savings of New York. It shows a smiling sailor in his white cap and bell-bottoms, walking with his sea bag slung over his shoulder. The coin slot is in the sack. The bank was founded in 1829 to serve sailors and the maritime trade in New York. It gave these little sailor banks to customers in the 1940s to encourage saving. Today they are a favorite with McCoy, advertising-bank and WWII home-front collectors. Collectors list it in the Huxfords\' Collectors Encyclopedia of McCoy Pottery.
This one is complete, which is getting hard to find:- The ORIGINAL CORK BASE PAD is present and printed \"The SEAMEN\'S BANK for SAVINGS\".- The ORIGINAL METAL TWIST STOPPER is present and marked \"TURN\" and \"CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS CHATHAM, N.J.\" The stopper is often missing.- It comes with the BOTTOM HALF of its original box. The lid is not included.
Condition: excellent, like-new vintage condition. The glaze is glossy and clean, the painted details on the face, cap, service stripes, blue base and shoes are bright, and no chips, cracks or repairs were noted. The ceramic is unmarked, as is typical for this bank; the only marks are on the cork pad and the stopper. Please see all photos, which are part of the description.
Size: approx. 5.5\" tall x 5.25–5.5\" long x 3\" deep. These measurements come from documented examples of this same bank, not from this piece.
Ships carefully double-boxed and well padded. Smoke-free home. Thanks for looking!
