Very Rare & Early OLD WEST San Francisco California GOLD RUSH ERA 1851 Newspaper:
$140.00

Very Rare & Early OLD WEST San Francisco California GOLD RUSH ERA 1851 NewspaperOffered is an original, collectible newspaper (NOT a copy/reproduction): DAILY ALTA CALIFORNIA, San Francisco, May 29, 1851 * Very early Old West title (rare)
* California gold rush eraThe very first title in the Golden State was the \"Californian\" begun in 1846, followed the next year by the \"California Star\". These two titles merged, and in 1849 the combined enterprise was called the \"Alta California\", becoming a daily in July. This is a volume 2 issue from just 8 months after statehood. It also became the first successful newspaper in California, lasting until 1891.
Included is a great wealth of illustrated ship ads, reflecting the tremendous growth from the Gold Rush boom.Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, nice condition. Folder size noted is for the issue folded in half. Background: This May 29, 1851 issue of the Daily Alta California is an exceptionally rare pre-Civil War artifact, published less than nine months after California achieved statehood and fewer than four weeks after the catastrophic Fifth Great Fire of San Francisco destroyed nearly three-quarters of the city, including the paper\'s own printing office. Issues from this volatile rebuilding window are scantly preserved in private hands, as most period copies were either lost to subsequent municipal blazes or worn down through heavy community pass-along reading in mining camps. Content-wise, this four-page broadsheet offers an intimate primary snapshot of Gold Rush San Francisco at its zenith, featuring extensive illustrated woodcut advertisement columns for steamships, clipper ships, and ocean packets navigating the booming maritime trade route, alongside localized coverage of rapidly evolving territorial jurisprudence, land claim disputes, regional commerce, and frontier social life during a defining flashpoint in American westward expansion. Please Note: All of our offerings are 100% authentic! We do not offer reprints or reproductions of any kind. They are guaranteed to be original!
Links to Archival Storage Options & Certificates of Authenticity Are Below!Historical reports may be beautifulor ugly, but they are always informative. While we rejoice in the beautiful (heroic, discovery, amazing feats, etc.), we at History\'s Newsstand also offer \"the ugly\" for we are determined to learn from the wrongs of the past - understanding, to do so, we must be willing to look these wrongs directly in the face and shout \"NO MORE!\". It is for this reason many Black Americans collect historic slave ads, Jews collect reports regarding the Holocaust, women collect coverage of the Women\'s Suffrage Movement, etc.. If you find any to be offensive, we agree! Hopefully this is an indication we are moving in the right direction.
