Rare original CDV of Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber by JW Black. 4" x 2.5". Very good antique condition.

Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber - Mrs. Partington (1814 - 1890) .Shillaber was from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. From a young age he was interested in printing. Moving to Boston he established himself as an editor and created his character "Mrs. Ruth Partington." Shillaber often wrote personal letters under this guise and used her name in quotations on cards, photos, etc. Shillaber also founded "The Carpet-Bag," a humor magazine based in Boston. Though the magazine was short lived, it had a national reputation and also published an article from a young man named Samuel L. Clemens.
