The plaque honors Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) D. F. Rahn for his elite service as Flag Lieutenant to the Commander of Carrier Group Two, spanning February 5, 1975, through September 18, 1975.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE & BIOGRAPHY:
LCDR D. F. Rahn was a highly accomplished officer whose career advanced significantly after this prestigious flag-level assignment. In the decades following his time with Carrier Group Two, he rose to the rank of Captain (O-6) and notably served as the Professor of Naval Science and commanding Officer of the Navy/Marine Corps NROTC unit at the University of Utah from 1990 to 1992.
His assignment in 1975 as Flag Lieutenant placed him on the immediate personal staff of the Admiral commanding Carrier Group Two (COMCARGRU 2), which serves as a premier strike group command within the U.S. Atlantic Fleet.
During this exact 1975 window, Carrier Group Two was commanded by the legendary Rear Admiral Eugene J. Carroll, Jr., operating out of Naval Station Norfolk and deploying heavy carrier assets to the Mediterranean as Task Force 60.
A Flag Lieutenant serves as the Admiral's direct operational right hand, making this plaque a scarce piece of high-level staff history.
