Two Antique Silk Wallets 1919 With Letters Korbel CA Lumber Camp Chinatown CALight soiling wear to the exterior hand painted silk; fine leather interiors are very good. Original boxes worn. Letters are age stained. These are little treasures, especially considering that 4 (3 complete and 1 partial) letters are tucked inside the boxes; sent home by a young midwestern man who set out to make his way in the world. He wrote home to his parents and sisters and sent the wallets (which were purchased in Chinatown in San Francisco) as gifts.
At the time he sent the letters he was working in a lumber camp "Camp 15" in Korbel California (Google it to see interesting photos!) and wrote that his best friends were "a half breed Indian and an Irishman".
And for reasons unexplained, he said in one of the letters that he was going by an alias at the lumber camp.
Fascinating pieces of American history!
